In the biology section of this department, we carry out a number of scientific activities. Our biology laboratory is well furnished with the necessary scientific equipment required to expose the students to the practical aspects of the subject. Some of the scientific activities done here include;
*Observation of wet-preserved and dry-preserved organisms, including drawing and labeling them where necessary.
*Dissecting organisms to view the internal parts
*Identifying the different parts of organisms either by direct observation or through a model.
*Making comparisons of the different organisms observed.
*Preparing, viewing and analyzing of samples of micro-organisms as well as other specimens using a microscope.
*Carrying out tests on various food samples to ascertain their chemical contents
*Some of the experiments carried out in this section include;
1. Experiments to demonstrate diffusion in liquids and gases.
2. Experiments to demonstrate osmosis using a living tissue and non-living material.
3. Experiments to demonstrate the photo-tropic response of shoot. etc
Our physics lab provides the basic foundation for the theoretical and practical concepts of physics as a subject in the senior secondary school.
The physics lab familiarizes the students with experimental apparatus, the scientific methods and the methods of data analysis so as to expose them to the inductive process by which the ideas were originated.
In this section, new concepts and techniques are introduced, which have a wide application in experimental science but which have not been introduced in the standard courses.
There is also the introduction of methods used for estimating and dealing with experimental uncertainties, including simple ideas in probability theory and the distinctions between random and systematic errors.
Here students learn how to write technical report as well as be able to communicate scientific information in clear and concise manner.
Welcome to our chemistry lab. Its Well equipped with everything a student would need to start a good foundation in the area of science. Two major scientific practicals are carried out here as obtained in the curriculum, viz;
*The quantitative analysis
*The qualitative analysis
Quantitative analysis is one of the most important aspect of practical chemistry. Here students learn about the titration of acids and bases. Furthermore, students learn how to carry out redox titrations with such reagents as KMnO4, Fe²+, oxalic acids etc.
In Qualitative analysis, students learn how to determine the presence of substances in a given sample; These substances may be atoms, ions molecules etc. Hence the students begin to familiarize with the processes of scientific analysis like;
*The testing of gases like CO2, H2, N2 etc.
*Testing of anions like NO3‾, Cl‾, HCO3‾ etc
*Testing of cations such as NH4†, Pb²†, Fe²†, Fe³†, Ca²† etc
*Functional group test such as the test for unsaturation (alkenes & alkynes), test for the carboxylic group, esters etc.
*Food test which involves the test for protein, fats & oil, carbohydrates etc
